Sea
Urchin II
I have purchased a SS27 in Darwin called Sea
Urchin II, it has been away from WA for many
years and at the end of this month I will be
sailing her home to Mandurah. She raced in
many of the Fremantle offshore races in the
eighties and has since been to Indonesia 7
times and Queensland once. She was extended
on launch to measure 28.5 feet (stern scoop
– do you know of any others with this
configuration?).

I am now
madly getting Sea Urchin ready for our
voyage home to Mandurah. I will be leaving
in just over four weeks with a few other
Cullen Bay layabouts to explore the Kimberly
region of WA. From there I will push on to
the Dampier Archipelago where my boys and I
will spend two weeks exploring the likes of
Ningalo and the Monte Bello Islands.
At the moment I am carrying out a lot of
cosmetic work on the yacht before
overhauling a few systems in preparation for
the trip. I have a new bimini being made, I
have tried to build immunity to ultra violet
radiation but this doesn't seem to work, so
I will see what shade has going for it.
One of the best purchases so far is a new
anchor, I purchased a slightly oversized
Manson with 20m of short link chain, it
holds me in place but I realise how much fun
it is to pull up, back to the gym.
The yacht will be staying in Mandurah once I
arrive, I do a fair bit of sailing up and
down the coast so it will get around.
